Abstract

The forecast of the rock behaviour during the construction of a tunnel is of great importance.

It requires the cooperation of different specialists, who should speak the same language in the technological way. The behaviour of the rock is of rheological type, so that the theories of elasticity and plasticity can no longer cope with the problem.

We have to consider the effect of time.

At the face the stress distribution is three-dimensional. The computational methods based on plane fields of displacements are not useful.

In the computations the method of construction has to be considered, which therefore becomes an element of the design. For the railway tunnel at the base of the St. Gothard-mountain, these facts were taken into account in the preliminary stage of the project.
