By returning to the philological work of Erich Auerbach, who explores the double meaning of the figura, in other words, its conceptual ambivalence, we will try to consider how this concept is transformed into a category of historical time. We will explore this problematic through the following gestures: on the one hand, the critical analysis of Auerbach’s work on figural interpretation and, on the other hand, the commentary of some sequences of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964) and Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinéma (1988-1998) as indicative paradigms of a movement directed by the relationships of figures whose function resembles that of the fragmentary thought that operates the montage. Cet article vise à aborder la question de la figure en tant que multitude temporelle et méthode d’analyse des images, qui est proprement liée à la pratique du montage. En revenant vers l’œuvre philologique d’Erich Auerbach, qui explore le double sens de la figura, autrement dit, son ambivalence conceptuelle, nous essayerons de considérer comment ce concept se transforme en une catégorie du temps historique. Nous explorerons cette problématique par les gestes suivants : d’un côté, l’analyse de l’interprétation figurale d’Auerbach et, de l’autre, le commentaire de certaines séquences des films L’Évangile selon Saint Mattieu (1964) de Pier Paolo Pasolini et Histoire(s) du cinéma (1988-1998) de Jean-Luc Godard dans lesquels nous découvrons des figures métahistoriques, qui sont fortement marquées d’une certaine pensée fragmentaire — celle du montage.
