Il vise ainsi à montrer qu’un esprit commun les animait. Dans un premier temps, on examinera dans quelle mesure la contemplation, qui est au centre des écrits de Malaval, peut être qualifiée d’expérience esthétique et ainsi être comparée à l’expérience de l’œuvre d’art, entendue comme lieu de manifestation du sublime. Puis, au travers de quelques exemples, l’article montrera comment la dépossession de soi, trait commun à l’expérience contemplative et au sublime, se manifeste à la fois thématiquement et spatialement dans la sculpture et dans l’architecture de l’artiste baroque. This paper proposes to bring together the works of two prominent figures from Marseille from the second half of the seventeenth century: the artist Pierre Puget (1620-1694) and the spiritual writer François Malaval (1627-1719). It aims to demonstrate that they shared a common ethos. Firstly, it considers how contemplation, the main subject of Malaval’s writings, can also be described as an aesthetic experience and thus comparable to the experience of artwork, which is interpreted as a manifestation of the sublime.
