Qu’en est-il de la fabrique sensible des territoires contemporains ? Comment rendre compte de la mise en ambiance des espaces urbains ? Que se passe-t-il quand il s’agit non seulement de concevoir des espaces mais d’installer des atmosphères ? Si les ressources de la philosophie seront mobilisées dans cet article, de telles questions s’ancrent assurément dans la réalité urbaine contemporaine. Elles mettent à l’épreuve aussi bien les sciences sociales que les pratiques de conception dans leur capacité à faire face aux transformations actuelles de l’écologie sensible des villes. Installer une atmosphère c’est à la fois prendre place et donner place, s’inscrire dans un lieu et le transformer, s’en accommoder tout en l’activant. Toute ambiance est en même temps spatialisée et spatialisante. Pour préciser ce cadre général on peut mettre l’accent sur trois aspects principaux : installer une atmosphère implique à la fois un art de l’accompagnement (prendre soin des permanences ordinaires et de l’arrière-plan sensoriel d’un territoire), un art de l’imprégnation (capacité à incorporer et infléchir les petites modulations d’un espace sensible) et un art de la tonalisation (doter un lieu d’une qualité d’ensemble qui lui confère une certaine physionomie). With the growing volume of work on the sensory, the next step is to make room for the fragile, transient entities we refer to as ambiances. So what can be said about the sensory fabric of contemporary territories? How are we to account for the staging of atmospheres in urban spaces? What happens when the goal is not only to design a space but also to install an atmosphere? If philosophy resources are referred in this article, such questions are undoubtedly rooted in contemporary urban reality. They test both the social sciences and the design practices in their ability to deal with the current transformations of the sensory ecology of cities. Installing an atmosphere involves both taking place and giving place, becoming part of a place and transforming it, making do with it while also animating it. Any ambiance is at one and the same time spatialized and spatializing.
