L’article propose de surmonter ces difficultés liées au concept d’histoire en s’aidant de la catégorie de « citation », dont Benjamin fait un usage discret mais néanmoins déterminant dans les Thèses. Un examen attentif des Thèses XIV, XV et III montre en effet que la citation comme manière d’actualiser le passé est une technique partagée aussi bien par l’historien matérialiste que par le penseur révolutionnaire, et que la « citabilité » (Zitierbarkeit) intégrale du passé constitue l’une des marques essentielles de l’âge messianique. The problems raised by Benjamin in 1940 about the « concept of history » are at least twofold: the first – political – one concerns the relationship between theory of history and revolutionary practice, the second – metaphysical – one the articulation between a profane and a sacred (or “messianic”) dimension of historical time. This paper tries to overcome those difficulties related to the concept of history by the means of the notion of “citation” of which Benjamin made a discrete but nevertheless decisive use in his Theses.
