Abstract
The 55 species of Colletidae bees from Romania are presented as a synthesis of the published records from the last 120 years and their presence in the various museum collections. The 19 species of Colletes and 36 species of Hylaeus listed here are shown according to the 8 historical regions of Romania.
1. Introduction
1The bees of Romania were recorded in a number of faunistic papers in the last 150 years (Mayr, 1853), but have never been the subject of a synthesis.
2The Colletidae bees have been found since the half part of XIXth century in the faunistic lists published by Heinrich (1880-1884), Frivaldszky (1873), Mocsáry (1897), Móczár & Henter (1906), Szilady (1914), Zilahi (1915), Móczár (1960, 1961) from the central and western regions of Romania (Maramureş, Crişana, Transylvania, Banat). Müller (1930), Constatinescu (1974, 1976), Matache (1995) and Tomozei (2005) have published data about Colletidae species from Dobrogea (southeast of Romania). Hylaeus species have been cited from the east of Romania (Moldavia) by Tomozei (2002). Pascu (1996) has published a catalogue of bee collections from the National Brukenthal Museum that contain records of Colletidae from Transylvania. In the revision of the Palaearctic species of the genus Colletes, Noskiewicz (1936) mentioned Colletes anchusae and Warncke (1978) cited Colletes hethiticus from Romania.
3The aim of this contribution is to present a checklist for the species of the genera Colletes and Hylaeus of Romania including details for all records and gazetteers of collecting localities (Table 1).
2. Material and methods
4Nomenclature of the Colletes species follows Kuhlmann (2000) and for Hylaeus follows Dathe (1980).
5The present article is based on the published records from the last 120 years and specimens deposited in the following public: MNSB (“Ion Borcea” Museum of Natural Sciences, Bacău, Romania), NMNH ("Grigore Antipa" National Museum of Natural History, Bucharest, Romania), NBM (National Brukenthal Museum – Museum of Natural History, Sibiu, Romania), OÖLM (Oberösterreichnisches Landesmuseum, Linz, Austria), SEM (Snow Entomological Museum, Lawrence, Kansas), RM Stockholm (Royal Natural History Museum in Stockholm, Sweden). A number of specimens are deposited in private collections: Prof. Dr. Holger H. Dathe (Germany), H. Riemann (Germany), Dr. Jósef Banaszak (Poland).
6The species are presented in alphabetical order according to the 8 Romanian historical regions from north to south (Maramureş, Crişana, Transylvania, Moldavia, Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia, Dobrogea). For some species food plants preferences are given.

4. Discussion
139The present list contains 55 species from the family Colletidae found until now in Romania, 19 species of Colletes and 36 species of Hylaeus. The Colletes species represent 9.2 % of the Palaeactic fauna of this genus, which includes 205 species (Kuhlmann, pers.comm.).
140Colletes maidli Nosk. is for the first time recorded from Romania.
141Hylaeus nivalis Mor. is currently known from France, Austria, Swiss and Italy (Dathe, 2000) and the record of this species in Romania (Zilahi, 1915) is possible to be the result of a misidentification. Still, the specimen is not found in any Romanian collection and was not possible to be verified.
142Because of Romanian position at the confluence between pannonic, continental, alpine, steppe and pontic (around the Black Sea) biogeographical regions (EEA, 2001) fauna include species with various origins and distribution. Thus the Romanian bee fauna must presumably be rich and divers and the presence of more Colletidae bees cannot be excluded mostly from the south and south east of Romania.
143Acknowledgements
144I am very grateful to Prof. dr. Holger Heinrich Dathe (German Entomological Institute-DEI) and Dr. Michael Kuhlmann (The Natural History Museum, London, UK) for their contribution to the preparation of this paper by providing personal collection references and identification of the Hylaeus and Colletes specimens.
