Résumé

On présente ici une amélioration de la clé de Bohart (1976) pour la détermination des espèces du genre Crabro Fabricius 1775, trouvées en Amérique du Nord et en Amérique Centrale. On donne ensuite une liste alphabétique des espèces avec des ajouts à l’information chorologique et parfois des notes sur leur variation.

Abstract

We present an improvement of Bohart (1976)’s key to the species of the genus Crabro Fabricius 1775, occurring in North and Central America. To follow there is an alphabetic list of the species with complementary distribution records and sometimes notes on their variation.

1. INTRODUCTION

1La détermination des mâles des espèces américaines de Crabro est facile avec la clé et les figures de Bohart (1976) ; néanmoins certaines améliorations sont opportunes, je les propose ci-dessous. Pour les femelles, la détermination est souvent faisable avec cette clé, mais il convient souvent de vérifier en lisant ce que Bohart précise ensuite (p. 242-284) ; en outre, dans certains cas, l’incertitude subsiste parce que les caractères de la clé sont trop peu nombreux ou peu évidents, ou parce qu’une espèce a été oubliée (tenuis) ou parce qu’il y a inversion des alternatives pour deux espèces (comosiceps, deserticola). On devrait réussir plus sûrement avec l’amendement que je vais proposer et dans lequel je tiens aussi compte de l’essai que Miller (1976) a publié pour un des groupes d’espèces (hilaris) et que Bohart ne connaissait pas quand il a écrit le sien.

2. MATERIEL

2Beaucoup des spécimens qui m’ont permis d’acquérir une certaine connaissance du genre dans les Amériques ont été obtenus suite à des échanges ou dons d’entomologistes américains et sont dans la collection du Conservatoire entomologique de Gembloux. D’autres ont été trouvés dans les collections de Crabroniens qui m’ont été prêtées pour détermination principalement par trois institutions qui dans mon inventaire l’inventaire sont indiquées par le nom de la ville mis entre parenthèses ; il s’agit de :

4. CATALOGUE ET DONNEES CHOROLOGIQUES

77Bohart & Menke (1976) présentent une clé pour classer les espèce du genre Crabro de la faune mondiale en « species groups » d’après les caractères des mâles. Bohart (1976) définit plus précisément ceux de ces « species groups » qui sont représentés dans la faune nord-américaine. Cependant, ici, pour faciliter la lecture, j’ai trouvé préférable, d’appeler les espèces par ordre alphabétique, sans référence à leurs affinités.

78En effet, le premier objectif du présent catalogue est, comme ci-dessus, d’aider le chercheur qui désire vérifier des déterminations de spécimens américains effectuées avec la clé de Bohart (1976). Pour cela, j’indiquerai pour chaque espèce la page « hors-clé » de cette révision où des précisions d’intérêt taxonomique sont données, de même pour les commentaires qui viennent après les clés dans Miller (1976) et Finnamore (1982). Aux mêmes pages de ces articles, le lecteur trouvera aussi au moins un aperçu de ce qui est connu de la répartition géographique et des références aux travaux relatifs au comportement et relations écologiques de l’espèce.

79Mais on ne peut pas oublier que, pendant que Bohart (1976) et Miller (1976) préparaient leur révision, Krombein terminait l’élaboration de son catalogue général des Sphecoidea qui ne fut publié que bien après, en 1979. Or, c’est dans ce catalogue qu’il faut chercher le détail des références à jour pour l’époque, relatives à la synonymie, au comportement et aux relations écologiques de chaque espèce, aussi une indication des Etats américains ou provinces canadiennes où elle a été trouvée. Il convenait donc que je donne aussi la référence de Krombein (1979), et même que je la donne en premier lieu.

80Plus récemment, Pulawski a entrepris de compiler sur Internet tout ce qui a été publié sur les Sphéciformes du monde. C’est donc à cette source monumentale qu’il faut aller désormais pour avoir des données bibliographiques complémentaires concernant le genre Crabro dans les Amériques (et ailleurs).

81Mon second objectif est de donner l’inventaire des spécimens américains du genre Crabro présents dans la collection du Conservatoire entomologique de Gembloux et d’y ajouter les données que j’ai obtenues en déterminant des spécimens  reçus en prêt d’autres institutions.
