Abstract

It was a great pleasure to organize in Liège the XIth Conférence Internationale Francophone d’Entomologie (CIFE) in early July 2026. Following the COVID-19 pandemic period, the usual four-year cycle of conferences was disrupted including the 2023 edition in Yaoundé. We gathered once again this year to share our common interest in entomology. The goal of the CIFE is to bring together French-speaking entomologists to share research findings and to establish or strengthen international connections. These conferences cover the entire range of entomological activities and reflect the diverse fields of study pursued by Francophone entomologists. Each edition focuses on a specific theme. This year, it was "Entomology in the Face of Globalization and the One Health Approach." The resurgence of infectious diseases and a growing awareness of the interdependence between human, animal and environmental health have highlighted the interactions involved and the multidisciplinary approach required to understand the role of insects across various contexts - ultimately encouraging a holistic perspective. Any change involving insects increases the risk of the emergence and spread of new diseases affecting plants, animals and/or humans. Particularly, globalization is a major factor in the evolution of insect dynamics and consequences.

While CIFE’s primary activity is organizing the quadrennial international entomology conference allowing to bring us together in Liège from July 6th to 9th this year, it must also strengthen its role as an efficient way, particularly by disseminating information’s on mobility opportunities and projects to foster collaborations among Francophone entomologists. The first CIFE conference was held in Paris in 1982. At the 1998 conference in Saint-Malo, it was decided to establish a scientific committee to ensure organizational continuity. This structure was formalized at the 2002 Montreal meeting with the appointment of a secretary-general. In 2025, a council of national delegates representing Francophone entomologists from 19 countries was established, reflecting CIFE’s desire to further expand the reach of its activities. CIFE ensures organizational continuity through an executive board and a dedicated website, while also developing initiatives to evolve its operations and enable Francophone entomologists to become actively involved in the organization.

I would like to thank the members of the CIFE board, the scientific committee for this edition, and the local organizing committee, as well as my colleagues at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech and the University of Liège for the respective support and efforts they have contributed to the success of this event. A special issue in the journal Faunistic Entomology is available here, illustrating the topics and contents of nearly 200 oral and poster presentations from the four-day conference. You also had the opportunity to visit the Jean Leclercq Insectarium – Hexapoda. This museum, recognized by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, features an exhibition space and a collection of six million naturalized specimens. Alongside the museum itself, you shown a site laid out as an ecological trail, featuring various elements designed to support local insect life.

Finally, I must explain one of the four illustrations of "One Health" featured on the CIFE XI poster: the one representing human health, which depicts Tchantchès, a historic and iconic puppet from Liège. This character is a folkloric figure emblematic of the city. His clothes, a black-and-white checkered trousers, a blue smock, a red scarf with white polka dots, and a black cap reflects the typical clothing of Northern European workers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He embodies the defiant spirit of the people of Liège that are courageous, determined and demonstrator of freedom. He also represents conviviality and active exchange of ideas. On behalf of the local organizing committee and the University of Liège, I hope that you spent a pleasant and social stay in our city according to the true spirit of Tchantchès to be filled with scientific and personal exchanges that will foster the development of entomology across our shared Francophone community. https://www.cife.uliege.be/cms/c_13694228/fr/cife-livre-des-resumes
