The Mousterian site of Starosele (Crimea, Ukraine) is well known by western archaeologists for the skeletal remains discovered there in 1953, said to have physical characteristics transitional between Neandertals and Homo sapiens, and to be associated with a late Mousterian occupation. New excavations raise the actual results of the original investigations, especially those concerning the human remains. This article sheds new light on the context of their discovery and significance, both of which continue to be misinterpreted in recent publications concerning the site.

The lithic industry with a biface tool (“para‑Micoquien”) in the final Middle Paleolithic period is characterized by an association of “schema opératoire” of producing tools (“façonnage”) and of Levallois primary flaking (“débitage Levallois”). Two methods were organized to produce a blade component which were transformed to convergent edged tools. The technological problem to obtain elongated and standardized artifacts by the method of Levallois primary blade making may explain a very reason of the presence of “façonnage” in the industry Para‑Micoquien.

The production of blanks for tool manufacturing (technique of primary flaking) at Moldova V in the final Middle Paleolithic period is characterized by the important development of blade products and special type of tools (backed knives which have a edge of core and not retouched blades). These tools were produced by the Levallois primary flaking (“débitage”). There were sterile layers between Middle and Upper Paleolithic. The fact illustrated a technological discontinuity between Middle and Upper Paleolithic.

Late Quaternary prehistoric investigations in Southern Belgium

Although Wallonia was one of the first regions of Europe to have Stone Age prehistoric research (as early as the 1820’s) and once whose record had sometimes been considered to be largely exhausted, recent research has provided significant evidence for Holocity of the fluctuating human settlement of NW Europe during the course of the Upper Pleistocene and initial Holocene. Here we report on the excavation and interdisciplinary analysis of cave, rockshelter and open-air sites pertaining to the Mousterian, Aurignacian, Gravettian, Magdalenian and Mesolithic periods (c 100 kya–8 kya). A critical aspect of hunter-gatherer adaptations to southern Belgium in all periods was the juxtaposition of the cave-rich NW flank of the Ardennes upland with the flint-rich, loess-covered plains to the north, on the frontier of glacial age human habitation in western Europe.
