Abstract

The reading of a chapter of De opificio mundi devoted to the creation of man throws light on the way Philo implements a noetic theory according to which the possibility of thinking God would be determined by the image God entrusts to the custody of man, which symbolizes the creative and reflexive thinking involved in God’s creation of man. The topic under consideration is the first creation, whose outcome is humanity or noetic man, created in the image and likeness of God (Gen, 1, 26) and then the creation of hyletic man, endowed with a body and sensitivity (Gen, 2,7). The specific terms chosen by Philo reveal that he uses the platonic motif of the divine statue enshrined in man. This statue embodies intellection and would be replicated in a reflection worthy of the praise that, within his soul, man gives as a token of his gratitude for what in himself transcends his own nature. Thanks to Philo’s interpretation, this platonic motif seems to herald neoplatonic noetic and the principles of rational thinking instrumental to theology.
