Abstract

The Rupt du Puits cave system, situated in Eastern France, is a covered karst of low plateaus. The climate of the region is humid temperate. The precipitation regime and the ground-water flows organization give rise to partial or total hydraulic heads in karst conduits. The erosion of the clay-sand cover, and the clastic sediment transport in the karst system, bring about a thin deposit of clay at each flood event. Two stalagmites (of a few decimeter) have been chosen in the cave system. They were sawed along their longitudinal axis, the surface was polished. Thin sections made on vertical sections show breakings of growth. 14 TIMS U/Th datings were performed in the scope of the PhD of Edwidge Pons-Branchu (ANDRA). The stalagmites contain a double record. Fistly they record the incorporation of detrital material in between calcite growth layers. The speleothem growth is interrupted by water flowing and a clay layers is deposit over the speleothem. The clay is inserted in the speleothem when new calcite is deposited on top during a lower water level in the cave. Secondly, the stalagmites registered movements due to the frequent water filling episods. The U/Th datings showed that the sample R69 has a general growth between 5.3 ka and 4.5 ka. Two fall-over movements (resulting in a change of direction of the longitudinal axis) were identified in the speleothem. The first one around 5 ka and the second one between 4.7 and 4.4 ka. The edge of the sample R81 is subactual and its base is at 1 ka. Several clastic layers appear in this chronicle. We can then determine that the return flood period recorded by stalagmites is related to rainfall and local geomorphologic settings. On a short term (here the end of Holocene), it is mainly the inner geomorphologic evolution of the cave system which affect the frequency of the floods. They bring about or stop the rising of water level. So, it shows that the cave system is unable to drain groundwater floods during certain periods and high waterlevels are recorded in the speleothem. These stalagmite records show a transitional period where inner geomorphologic conditions are evolving in the cave system.
