FREUNDT, A.. & ROSI, M. (Eds.). From magma to tephra. Modelling physical processes of explosive volcanic eruption. Developments in volcanology, 4. Elsevier, 1998, 318 p. ISBN 0-444-82959-8. NLG 285, US$ 135.

géologie, stratigraphie et sédimentologie;

géomorphologie;

climatologie et hydrologie;

hydrogéologie;

hydrochimie.

CHAPELLIER, D. Well logging in hydrogeology. A. A. Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, 1992, 184 p. ISBN 90-5410-207-1. US$ 75, NLG 135.

La polarisation spontanée (SP log);

Les diagraphies électriques (Single point, sonde normale, sonde latérale);

Les diagraphies nucléaires (gamma ray, gamma

gamma, neutron);

Les diagraphies soniques;

FETTER, C.W. Contaminant hydrogeology. Prentice Hall, 1999, 2e éd., 500 p. + 1 CD-ROM. ISBN 0-13-751215-5. US$43.95

Maarten DE WIT & Lewis D. ASHWAL, éd. 1997. Greenstone Belts. Oxford Monographs on Geology and Geophysics 35, 809 p. Oxford University Press, Saxon Way West, Corby NN18 9ES. ISBN 0-19-854056-6 (Hardback). Price: 165 GBP = 10,600 BEF

Greenstone belts provide a unique opportunity to study the evolution of the early history of the Earth. All aspects of greenstone belt geology are covered in the superb new book simply entitled Greenstone Belts edited by Maarten de Wit and Lew Ash wal. Greenstone belts are belt-like areas within Precambrian shields that contain significant amounts of dark green altered or metamorphosed basic igneous rocks and that are associated with granitic or TTG (tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite) suites. There are at least 260 individual Archean greenstone belts world-wide, most of which are severely tectonized with duplication of stratigraphie sequences and display variable grades of metamor-phism ranging from sub-greenschist to granulite. Greenstone belts have long been recognized for their exceptional mineral deposits, in particular nickel sulfide deposits associated with komatiitic magmatism, volcanogenic massive sulfide Cu-Zn-Pb deposits, iron formations, and lode-gold deposits. As the editors make clear in their cleverly titled and informative preface "Convergence Towards Divergent Models of Greenstone Belts", geologists today agree to disagree about a single model for the origin of greenstone belts and granite-greenstone terrains. This is fundamentally linked to how different geologists view the application of the principle of uniformitarianism to tectonic processes in the Archean. Did plate tectonics as we understand it in the modern world operate during the Archean? If not, are there other forms of global resurfacing, perhaps related to the influence of mantle plumes? Readers will not find absolute answers to these basic questions, but instead have the opportunity to read different sides of the debate and form opinions for themselves. The editors are to be congratulated for encouraging this kind of open debate, which is stimulating and healthy for the Earth Science community at large.

Greenstone Belts contains 45 invited contributions divided into two major thematic parts: (1) general aspects of Archean greenstone-belt geoscience, and (2) regional distribution and geology of granite-greenstone terrains and greenstone belts world-wide. The nearly 100 authors are recognized authorities in their respective fields and the scientific quality of the papers is uniformly high. This book is essential reading for all geoscientists involved in Precambrian geology and would make an excellent base for a graduate level seminar course. The text is easy to read, the figure captions informative, the tables vital, and the figures (including photos of outcrop relations) are very well reproduced. Location maps (in color) showing the disposition of greenstone belts of Gondwana and Laurasia and referenced to the chapters in the book are included on the inside of the front and back cover, respectively. Readers will find them to be extremely useful. In addition, the book contains complete author addresses and a comprehensive 7 page index, which includes references to tables and illustrations. All of this, however, comes at a price. Greenstone Belts, available from Oxford University Press (http://www.oup.co.uk), lists for 165 GBP or about 10,600BEF and is thus clearly too high-priced for students and most professionals. After a comprehensive historical review of the origin, composition, and setting of Archean greenstone belts, the material in the book focuses dominantly on post-1980 research. This is because important advances in recent years have helped revolutionize our understanding of greenstone belts, notably (1) the greatly improved precision and accuracy of geochronometers, especially the U-Pb system, (2) the use of radiogenic isotope tracer studies to model crustal growth processes and mantle evolution, particularly the Sm-Nd system, and (3) the detailed remapping of the best-preserved, well-studied, low-grade greenstone belts in Canada, Africa, and Australia. Papers in the first part of the book address all the major aspects of greenstone belt geology - sedimentology, volcanology, structure, metamorphism, metallogeny, heat production, magmatism (ultramafic, mafic, intermediate, and felsic), fluids, and geophysics. The most.important, and controversial, subjects concern the origin and role of komatiites in greenstone belts (dry, high-temperature MgO-rich magmas vs. wet, lower-temperature MgO-rich magmas and implications for the temperature of the Archean mantle), the origin of the TTG suite (partial melting of basalt vs. partial melting of enriched upper mantle), and the structural relationship between greenstone belts and associated TTG rocks (autochthonous vs. allochthonous contacts). The second part of the book contains 26 papers that comprise an exhaustive review of the geology of specific cratons and individual greenstone belts, including 20 papers on Archean examples and 6 papers on selected Proterozoic and Phanerozoic analogues. Nearly every known Archean craton is represented (Slave Province, Superior Province, Zimbabwe Craton, Indian Shield, Yilgarn Craton, Baltic Shield, etc.). For each contribution, the editors asked the authors to provide a modern up-to-date map of the craton or greenstone belt in question and a series of standardized tables that summarize the essential characteristics of every major greenstone belt - areal extent, thickness, age, stratigraphy (% komatiites, proportion sedimentary to igneous rocks), types and percent of volcanic rocks, metamorphic grade and age, deformation, mineral deposits, geophysical properties and geoche-mical signatures, distinguishing features, and proposed tectonic setting. These tables represent an invaluable contribution and allow the editors, and readers, to compile huge amounts of otherwise difficult to find information.

The unifying theme to this book, touched upon several times by the editors and found in many individual chapters, is that greenstone belts are not necessarily constrained to the Archean. There are many important examples of Proterozoic and Phanerozoic granite-greenstone analogues. What then is unique about the Archean Earth and unique about Archean greenstone belts, especially since komatiites are now known to occur throughout most of the Earth's history? As food-for-thought, the editors note that both calcic mega-crystic anorthosites and ocelli in the mafic/ultramafic rocks of greenstone belts are restricted to the Archean and that the detailed petrogenesis of both is still uncertain. In their concluding thoughts, they argue strongly that future research will require increased collaboration between Earth scientists who study modern-day processes and those who focus on Archean geology. They also suggest provocatively that it maybe time to discard the designation "Precambrian Geologist" and perhaps even "Precambrian Research" as being too limiting! In any event, this book is a tremendous success and absolutely vital material for geologists interested in any aspect of the origin and evolution of greenstone belts and should be in all major institutional Earth Science libraries.

DURANT, B., JOLIVET, L., HORVATH, F. & SERANNE, M. (Editors) 1999. The Mediterranean Basins: Tertiary Extension within the Alpine Orogen. Geological Society Publishing House, Unit 7, Brasmill Enterprise Centre, Brasmill Lane, Bath BAI 3JN. Geological Society Special Publication 156, 570 pp. ISBN 1-86239-033-9. Price £ 89.00.

This Special Publication of the Geological Society of London contains 23 papers, of which 15 are produced within the framework of the Integrated Basin Studies project (IBS), and of which 8 arise from a workshop with the same title as this book, held in 1996 at the University of Cergy-Pontoise (France), in collaboration with the IFP. The IBS project aimed at studying the interaction between formation, development and infilling of sedimentary basins and large-scale, deep processes such as the convective movements of the mantle. Special attention has been paid to the near-surface expressions of deep deformations. This book fits in a trilogy on European Basins. The first volume, published in 1998, concerned the Cenozoic Foreland Basins of Western Europe (Mascle et al., 1998). The third volume, currently in preparation, concerns the Norwegian rifted margin. The Mediterranean basins have been chosen because of their particular tectonic setting. The Mediterranean region is indeed exceptional because of the coexistence in space and time of growing mountain belts and actively extending basins. The objective of both the workshop and this collection of papers is to explain the sudden start, 30 million years ago, of the development of extensional basins in an overall compressive setting sandwiched between the African and Eurasian Plates. Results are presented of more than 15 years of data acquisition, ranging from seismic tomography, geodesy and geophysics to classical structural, penological and geochronological work in the field. The synthesis of all these data resulted in an overall geodynamic model in which mantle dynamics play a significant role. Processes, such as slab rollback, slab detachment and gravitational collapse of a thickened crust, are currently considered responsible for the particular extensional setting of the Mediterranean region. Examples of three types of extensional basins are treated. Besides the geodynamics the hydrocarbon systems are discussed for both the Mediterranean as a whole and the different basins in particular. A general paper is indeed dedicated to the petroleum systems in the Mediterranean. Another general paper treats the origin and dynamics of west-dipping subduction zones, of which an example is present in the western Mediterranean. The western Mediterranean (Liguro-Provençal basin and Tyrrhenian Sea) is indeed situated in a back-arc setting caused by the retreat of a west-dipping subduction zone. Extension in these basins has reached the stage in which new oceanic crust has been created. The Gulf of Lion is extensively discussed as an example of a newly formed "passive" margin. This part of the Mediterranean is treated in 8 papers.

The Pannonian basin is treated in 8 papers. In this basin extension has ended, so that it is again placed in a compressional setting.

The eastern Mediterranean, and more particular the Aegean Sea, serves as an example of a continental domain affected by extension due to gravitational collapse resulting in a Basin-and-Range tectonic setting. 4 papers concern this part of the Mediterranean. This selection of high-quality papers certainly presents the current state of the art on the geodynamics of the Mediterranean basins. However, these papers are, in my opinion, only of interest for geologists interested in extension and exhumation processes within compressional tectonic settings, or for geologists working in the Mediterranean and Alpine regions.

PERKINS CR. & PARRY R.B. 1996. MAPPING THE UK. Maps and spatial data for the 21s' Century. Bowker & Saur, Maypole House, Maypole Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 1HU, UK, 397 p. ISBN 1-85739030-X (form. 21,5/30 cm) £ 125.

Alain PERRODON. 1999. Quel pétrole demain ?

Editions Technip, 27rue Ginoux, F-75737Paris cedex 15. 17x24 cm, 112 pages, 40 fig. ISBN 2-7108-0769-6. Prix 160 FF/24,39 EUR.
