Abstract

ABSTRACT. Influence of facturation on underground drainage and conduit morphology in Mont Godinne (Belgium). This work studies the karst system of Mont Godinne (Province of Namur, Belgium). This study of the relationship between tectonic style and karstification consists in measuring the stylolites, tension veins and faults with their associated striations to draw the stress ellipsoid and the distribution of the tension veins. Among all fractures, the tension veins are most open and therefore, supposed to be the draining planes. This distribution is then compared to the distribution of the gallery orientations and this shows that the tension planes generate the karstic drainage. This distribution allows to sketch the spatial organisation of the karstic flows (unique or superposed aquifer). Cave development is also compared to the distribution of the karstified discontinuities: joint or bedding planes, oriented along the gallery and open by dissolution. The gallery orientation is always parallel to the intersection of a tension vein and a karstified discontinuity. In the case of bedding planes, the tension plane allows the flow, generates the gallery and the differential dissolution orients this one in the tension plane, i. e. parallel to the stratification. Therefore, the majority of these karstified discontinuities are not draining planes and are only operative on the gallery morphology.
