Abstract

ABSTRACT. The principal elements in the tectonically-controlled karstic evolution of the Serra do Ramalho carbonate massif (Bahia, Brazil). The karst of the Serra do Ramalho massif is developped, under a tropical climate with a dry season, on the dolomite and limestone of the Proterozoic Bambui' Group. Its initiation and polyphased evolution are controlled by tectonics: the drainage alignments being determined by the structural pattern. Epirogenic movements have provided a periodicity to the erosion of the overlying pelitic sandstone formations. These factors have controlled the multiphased karstic evolution in relation to successive reduction of the base level and are responsible incision and widening of the valleys. The progressive and probably continual destruction of the pelitic sandstone formations, which forms the hydrologie reservoir of the massif, has led to the development of a range of landforms over space and time. They range downstream from karrens to potholes, and from potholes to canyons. The progressive fossilisation of these landforms is controlled by mass movements, particulary rockfalls and colluviation. Although the evolution of this system cannot be dated directly, the continued epeirogeny of the South America continent that began at the and of the Cretaceous, suggests that the system began forming before the beginning of the Quaternary.
