Abstract

ABSTRACT. Fault detection by means of geomagnetic surveys and radon emissions in the vicinity of Stolzembourg, Oesling, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Many structural and mineralogical data have been collected in the old copper mine near Stolzembourg, north of Vianden. The mineralization follows strike-slip faults with a North-South orientation (oriented dip 60°/270°), and is rejected by inverse faults with an East-West orientation (oriented dip 80°/350°).The observation of the faults is only possible inside the mine, as nothing is visible at the surface. The study of the superficial traces of these faults by means of two geophysical techniques, magnetic measurements and the use of radon as a tracer gas, can be correlated. It is thus possible to show that lineaments oriented North-South, NW-SE and East-West exist and that some of them can be considered as fault traces. Radon measurements give aligned anomalies which could correspond with the fault trace.
