Abstract
In the first part of this paper a recent discovery is reported of an early use of the term 'STEREOLOGIE', completely different from the current one. The rest of the paper constitutes an informal account on the recent evolution of stereology, notably on the estimation of particle number, mean size and size distributions. Perhaps the main conclusion reached in this paper takes the form of a good advice given by the late Hans Elias in his After—Dinner talk at the Second International Congress for Stereology (Elias, 1967): «lt is up to us stereologists to keep our eyes and ears open ...»
Keywords : disector, number, particles, selector, size distributions, unfolding
