original pdf fileAbstract
The paper makes a balance of recent political transition on the transformation of the Hungarian countryside. Main effects are the follows :
1. Rural local governments get a great independence what resulted in a practical desintegration of functional urban regions.
2. The privatization of agriculture transformed the social structure as well as the property structure of the countryside.
3. Economic crisis which has accompanied the post-socialist transition has hit rural economy more seriously than urban economy.
4. Rural inequalities are rapidly growing. These inequalities are expressed mostly in income and employment rates. Rural out-migration has accelerated.
5. Government' s regional policy distributes budget subsidies among the poorest villages instead of promoting regional development projects.
