This paper examines the question of rural lifestyles and identities. It summarizes different approaches that rural sociology has used to formulate it. From certain deep tendencies of modernity, the paper shows that is no longer possible to analyse rural problems by assuming any kind of correspondence between places and social groups. Locality becomes paradoxical : it is diluted in many different uses, different institutions and management tools, but in the same time local regulations and bargaining between social actors is increasingly important. Rural culture in a modern world would then be a culture of integration and negotiation.
