Responsibilities and ethical rules of peer review
This ethical statement on the responsibilities and ethical rules of peer review is strongly inspired by the one adopted by the Cahiers de géographie du Québec and adapted to the specificities of the BSGLg journal.
The Geographical Society of Liège subscribes to the principles of peer review for contributions published in the BSGLg journal. Responsibility for this evaluation is shared by the publisher, the Editorial Board, the Scientific Committee and the specialists who occasionally collaborate with the journal. This division of responsibilities is practiced as follows: any manuscript submitted to BSGLg is evaluated by experts who are selected from the international scientific community.
This evaluation respects complete anonymity. The name of the author of the manuscript is not revealed to the experts consulted and the author is not informed of the names of the reviewers who evaluate his manuscript. The selection of reviewers is the responsibility of the Editorial Board, which acts under the supervision of the Journal's Steering Committee.
The peer review process offers the best conditions for a fair assessment of the scientific value of the manuscripts submitted to them and opens the door to many geographical orientations. To be satisfactory, such a process must rely on the competence, integrity and dedication of all those involved. For this reason, reviewers and members of the editorial board undertake to respect the following ethical rules:
- The mandate of the reviewers and members of the editorial committee is individual and not institutional.
- The reviewers and members of the editorial board shall perform their duties in complete independence, without acting as promoters of particular interests or backgrounds.
- Reviewers and members of the editorial board are bound by strict confidentiality; they must exercise absolute discretion in the conduct of their duties; they must under no circumstances reveal the origin and content of manuscripts, the names of the reviewers or the nature of the deliberations relating to the evaluation. Only the scientific publisher is authorized to communicate the results of the evaluation to the authors.
- Reviewers and members of the editorial board must respect the intellectual property of the authors whose manuscripts they are reviewing. Under no circumstances may they use or transmit to anyone the manuscripts they evaluate, nor may they appropriate the research results they contain.
- Reviewers and members of the editorial board who have any interest, direct or indirect, in a favourable or unfavourable decision regarding the evaluation or publication of a manuscript are in a conflict of interest and may not participate in the manuscript's evaluation process.
- Reviewers and members of the editorial board who have or believe they have a personal or professional relationship with the author of a manuscript are in a conflict of interest and may not participate in the manuscript's evaluation process. More specifically, a professional conflict of interest exists if the author and the evaluator (examiner or member of the editorial board) are attached to the same university department, laboratory or research centre; or if they have collaborated as part of the same research team over the past five years. There is also a conflict of interest if one has directed or co-directed the thesis of the other.
