Summary. - The aim of the work is twofold: to give the main intrinsic characterictics of self-service supermarkets and hypermarkets in the region of Liège and to examine their spatial insertion in the heart of this built-up area. Based on very precise surveys, it also tries to improve the methods used to study supermarkets and hypermarkets by putting forward new criteria and by perfecting certain types of analysis. Not only does it emphasize the big quantitative and qualitative features of these sales points but it also stresses the problem of localisation which is dealt with from three different points of view : structuration of the agglomeration, areas of insertion and accessibility by road and by bus.
