Abstract

Modintour (Modèles Innovants en tourisme rural) is a multidisciplinary research program on tourism in the Auvergne (France) that explores the evolution of the models of tourism in rural areas in an unstable environment due firstly to the difficulty to forecast demand and above all to a situation of global crises : climate change and economic crisis.

Ranging from a concentrated tourism that would be far from the territories issues and residents on the one hand, and a diffuse tourism that would lack of organization, and would generate low economic effects on the other hand, the observed situations are hybrid.

One part of this research program deals with the demand and studies firstly the profiles of clienteles, but also the tourist image of the Auvergne destination, even tackling the forms of marketing of the representative sectors in their competitive context.

These objectives lead to the following questions: What tourist demand and which image for the Auvergne? What marketing approach could correspond to it considering the tourist models?

With regard to the common questions of the research program, we postulate that if the tourist image sanctions the diffuse nature of the tourism in Auvergne (matching a still effective reality), the appropriate forms of organization in a marketing approach sanction a concentrated nature, which represents a considerable change for this kind of activity in rural areas.
